Fascinating Facts

You'll see famous London landmarks as you cruise. The London Eye dominates the capital's skyline at 135m (450ft) and is the world's highest observation wheel. William the Conqueror began building the Tower of London in 1078 and its Norman chapel is the oldest church in London. Over 150,000 vehicles cross Tower Bridge every day and over 900 times a year the roadway parts and lifts to let large river traffic pass through. It was completed in 1894, and solved the problem of building a bridge downstream from overcrowded London Bridge without disrupting river activities. The Tate Modern was originally Bankside Power Station built between 1947 and 1963, and the architect was Sir Giles Gilbert Scott who also designed the red telephone box. It was redesigned by Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron to house the Tate collection. The first St Paul's Cathedral was completed in 1283 but was badly damaged during The Great Fire of London in 1666. It was demolished and rebuilt under the direction of Christopher Wren, then in his thirties. St. Paul's took 35 years to build and it has the second largest dome ever built - the largest is St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. So here's some food for thought whilst you enjoy your cruise.
