Fascinating Facts

Throughout history armour has played a vital part in battle but armoured vehicles took longer to arrive. Leonardo da Vinci, when he wasn't designing helicopters, tried to build the ultimate armoured battle vehicle, but he didn't have a method of propulsion. Then, in the late 19th century the internal combustion engine was invented and armoured cars were created. However in 1914 these couldn't cope with battlefields divided by trenches and ploughed up by shells. A vehicle running bands of metal plates was required that was able to spread its weight over a broader area, and provide a kind of bridge over holes and uneven surfaces. The Mark I tank was designed at Lincoln in late 1915. A prototype, affectionately known as 'Mother', was ready by January 1916. The world's first tank to engage in war was D1, the first tank of D Company of the Heavy Section of the Machine Gun Corps (thus named in order to disguise the unit's true nature from the enemy). At 5.15am on 15 September its commander, Captain Harold Mortimore, ordered an attack on the nearby German trenches - and a new form of warfare was born. Today, however, tanks and military-style vehicles don't just evoke fear - they also provide fun for drivers who test their amazing manoeuvrability over challenging terrain.
