Fascinating Facts

Doncaster, the only racecourse in South Yorkshire, is home to the world's oldest Classic race, the St. Leger, the feature of Doncaster’s four-day festival in September. The course on Town Moor dates back to 1776 and traditionally begins Britain's Flat season 'on turf' in March and brings it to a close in November.

Set in a stunning natural amphitheatre, Cheltenham is the undisputed home of National Hunt racing. Hosting 16 fixtures of superb quality each year, Cheltenham is best known for the National Hunt Festival held in March, when crowds of 50,000 gather to watch the best horses and jockeys from Britain, Ireland and Europe compete in jumping’s ‘Olympics’.

No Racecourse in the world has a more historic setting than Chester's Roodee. It was here that the Roman Legions arrived to build their fortress Deva. In the days of Roman occupation, the River Dee washed up to the walls where today, thousands stand to cheer on the Winner of the Chester Cup.

The first official records of horse racing at Chester date back to the early Sixteenth Century, making it the country's oldest Racecourse. With almost five hundred years of history behind us, no other Racecourse is as well positioned to offer all the excitement and entertainment associated with "A Day at the Races".
