This luxury train holiday in Scotland departs from the capital and takes you to visit Kyle of Lochalsh followed by the Boat of Garten, Rothiemurchus, Glenfinnan and Mount Stuart before returning back to Edinburgh. Seven days will be spent exploring some of Scotland’s highlights including natural wonders such as Steall Waterfall and a choice between a boat trip to see wild deals or a visit to Eilean Donan Castle.
After a day of discovering the wonders of Scotland, retire aboard the Belmond Royal Scotsman luxury train for an evening of fine dining. Numerous courses of cuisine accompanied by beverages of your choice to end a fabulous day. After enjoying the view glide by, retire to your own accommodation complete with en suite to unwind ready for the next day.
Day 1 – Edinburgh:
Board the Royal Scotsman at Waverley Station in Edinburgh early afternoon. Cross the Firth of Forth over the Forth Railway Bridge. Settle in to your private accommodation, explore the train and take afternoon tea. An informal dinner is served in the evening.
Day 2 – Kyle of Lochalsh:
Breakfast is served as we continue along the Highlands towards Inverness. Lunch is served on the way to Kyle of Lochalsh. Arrive in the fishing village of Plockton, take a boat trip to see a colony of wild seals and take in the magnificent views across the bay to the Apple cross Mountains. Take a woodland walk with time to spare for a Highland welcome in the Plockton Hotel. Return to the train for a formal dinner followed by coffee and liqueurs in the Observation Car.
Please note: It is possible on some very rare occasions, that you will instead visit Cawdor Castle instead of Plockton.
Day 3 – Boat of Garten:
Take an early morning walk with our host over the bridge that links the mainland with the Isle of Skye, or instead take a short drive before breakfast to Eilean Donan Castle. Depart from Kyle of Lochalsh where breakfast is served on board. After lunch you’ll visit one of Scotland’s most romantic castles, Ballindalloch. Take either a tour of the castle and grounds or play a round of 9-hole golf on the castle’s course. Guests can chose to visit the castle’s own whisky distillery. Later, return to the train at Boat of Garten for an informal dinner. Later that night, local musicians play in the Observation Car.
Day 4 – Rothiemurchus:
Take breakfast onboard, and after visit Rothimurchus Estate where you are offered to select from a range of activities such as play pigeon shooting, finishing or an estate tour. Refreshments are served in the hunting lodge before returning to the train in Kingussie for lunch. Depart at Dunkeld for a private tour of Glamis Castle and gardens. Rejoin the train in Perth for a formal dinner and a night of entertainment courtesy of live musicians
Day 5 – Edinburgh:
Wake up to beautiful scenery as we arrive in Edinburgh, take a guided tour of the Royal Yacht Britannia as well as a light lunch on board. Alternatively, take time in Edinburgh and explore the city at leisure. Rejoin the train early afternoon and head towards the edge of Gare Loch where you will take afternoon tea as you take in the spectacular views. As we head towards Rannoch Moor, head to the Observation Car for a picturesque view of the beautiful Scottish landscape. Later, an informal dinner is served followed by entertainment from local musicians in the Observation Car.
Day 6 – Glenfinnan:
Head to the Observation Car as we travel west for views of Ben Nevis before we arrive at Arisaig and disembark for a gentle stroll along the beautiful Morar Sands. Return to the train for lunch as we retrace our route towards Fort William. Arriving at Glenfinnan, disembark for a tour with our guide and enjoy cream tea in the drawing room at Inverlochy Castle Hotel before returning to Fort William. Guests are also invited to choose an alternative hike of Nevis Gorge, weather permitting. Leisure time on board is ideal for relaxing before an informal dinner is served.
Day 7 – Mount Stuart:
As we leave the Bridge of Orchy this morning, be sure to take in the passing views of the dramatic Highland scenery as we head towards Glasgow. As we arrive at Wemyss Bay, we board a ferry to the Isle of Bute, a beautiful location with a variety of landscapes. We head to Mount Stuart for a visit of this spectacular Victorian Gothic houses and admire the architecture, art and gardens. Afternoon tea is served in the Drawing Room after which you are free to explore. Later, we board the Royal Scotsman once more for a formal dinner followed by entertainment in the Observation Car and farewell drinks.
Day 8 – Edinburgh:
Enjoy breakfast as we make our way back to Edinburgh where your journey is concluded.
